Abu Dhabi City
Abu Dhabi City, capital of Abu Dhabi Emirate, one of the United Arab Emirates, formerly the Trucial States or Trucial Oman, and the national capital of that federation. It occupies most of a small triangular island of the same name, just off the coast in the Persian Gulf and connected to the mainland by a short bridge. Abu Dhabi used to be an underdeveloped town with only local importance; however, the revenues from oil helped the emirate to develop it into a modern city with developed infrastructure.
The Abu Dhabi town was uninhabited until the year 1761, after which some tribesmen of the BU Falah section of the Banū Yās confederation of which rule Abu Dhabi even today. They moved their headquarters to this coastal islet from the inland Līwā’ oasis in 1795. Through most of the 19th and early 20th centuries, though the capital of one of the chief sheikhdoms of the Trucial Coast, the town yielded pride of place in trade and economic importance to the towns of Dubai and Sharjah, capitals of neighboring Trucial sheikhdoms. At the turn of the 20th century, Abu Dhabi town’s population was about 6,000, with pearl diving from the rich offshore banks and some local trade providing the economy.
